Margret Maehlen demonstrates unusual floral arrangements !

You missed a real treat if you didn't make it to the last "Class Acts" on flower decorating with our very own AIW member Margret Maehlen! It was absolutely amazing watching the miracles she creates with little bits of material, flowers, vegetables, beads and buckets!

When the twenty AIW ladies arrived in the Clay Township Community Room, Margret had three tables set with dishes, placemats and silverware, ranging from the very informal to the very formal. For each of these table settings, she showed us how to make two different types of floral settings. Her techniques included simple ideas such as wrapping garden moss around florist foam and inserting small cut flowers, placing single roses in several small pots and decorating them with ivy and raffia, painting place setting names on ivy leaves in gold pen, and placing several purple buckets filled with purple crocuses on a table.

One of her more unusual arrangements consisted of a large cone-shaped glass filled with onion bulbs on the bottom, topped by a blooming crocus bulb! Margret said that anybody can create interesting and inexpensive arrangements, just by using items that we already have around our houses/gardens: beads, vegetables, ivy, buttons, leaves, flowers, feathers, egg shells, etc.

Many of you recognize Margret's unusual and beautiful flower creations from the many Gala events and luncheons that she has provided flowers for. She has a special talent, largely as a result of her creativity, but also due to her many years of training in Germany . She studied for over 5 years to become a Meisterfloristin (master florist). Before she moved to the USA , Margret owned her own flower shop in Germany .

Most of you probably have a special skill, knowledge or interest that you haven't thought about, but that would be of interest to other ladies in AIW. Perhaps you have a special interest in still-life photography, a specific type of painting, playing the bagpipes, CPR, a special cooking skill, knitting baby blankets, or collecting figurines. We'd love to have you showcase your talents in "Class Acts."
