President's Letter
September - October 2008

It is my pleasure to be your AIW President for 2008-2009.

When Norma Perez introduced me to this group nearly 4 years ago, I never dreamed how much AIW would become a part of my life. The wonderful interest groups, the delicious luncheons, the informative educational seminars, and superb special events are what make this organization work. But even more important are the lifelong friendships that we enjoy with other members of AIW.

Speaking of friendship, thanks so much to our past president and my friend Annette Glauninger and her Board for an outstanding 2007-2008 year. Her outstanding leadership and vision continued to propel our organization forward.

And thank you to the wonderful ladies who have agreed to be members and assistants on this year's AIW Board. Many of you have been meeting over the summer to begin planning our activities. I thank you for your willingness to serve, as well as your great ideas that will help make our organization better.

Together with millions of people from around the world, I am enjoying watching the summer Olympic events telecast from Beijing . The opening ceremonies were delightful, colorful and truly inspiring. The women are especially amazing --- from 41 year old American Dara Torres competing in her 5th Olympics, to Marianne Vos from the Netherlands who has won every Dutch, European and world prize in cycling, to Marta Vieira da Silva, a Brazilian soccer superstar. We can marvel at the talent and athleticism of the youth of our world.

What happened to the summer? It just flew by, all too quickly. Our summer vacations are now pleasant, but distant memories. Our children and grandchildren are back in school, and now we are settling back into our routines. I hope you make time in your routine to attend the wonderful AIW activities that we have planned.

We'll kick off our new AIW year with the September luncheon planned for Agio's downtown. If you haven't seen the transformation going on along Massachusetts Ave , come to the luncheon and then enjoy the afternoon, taking a leisurely stroll along this "up-and-coming" area in Indianapolis .

In September our Association will collaborate with the Latin American Film Festival to show award winning films at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The movies that showcase women will be shown on Sept 11th and 25th.

On October 10th, our own AIW member and former president Sally Sebeckis, will present a seminar on resume writing and career planning. Sally conducted a similar seminar several years ago, and received superb reviews from our participants. Sponsored by the Education Committee, the cost is right (FREE), and you'll get all kinds of tips and good ideas if you are thinking about going back to work.

For the next two months, our Indiana weather is unusually spectacular --warm sunny days and crisp, cool nights! It's a great time to explore local festivals. Festivals that feature pumpkins, persimmons, apples, the arts, crafts, and covered bridges abound throughout the state. If you are new to the area, don't hesitate to ask a current AIW member what she might recommend.

I hope you take advantage of all that AIW offers. Try attending an interest group you haven't attended before. Bring a friend with you to a luncheon. Do you have a special talent or interest that others might like to hear about? Our Class Acts interest group, organized by Annette Glauninger, would love to help you "tell your story." And if you have an idea for a new interest group, please contact Linda Halcomb, our VP- Interest Groups.

I'm looking forward to an exciting, fun-filled year!

Jeanne Lugo
President
