Perhaps some of you will share the race fever by going downtown on May 24th to experience the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade. If you don't mind the crowds, ramble to the Speedway on race day and join in the singing of "Back Home Again in Indiana " and gaze at the release of multi-colored balloons just prior to the firing of the engines.
Our gala at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in early March was a most successful evening. "The party was sensational!" "It was absolutely the best!" "In two words: fabulous night!" These are some of the comments made by AIW members about the event. I would once again like to extend a huge thank you to Nancy Dorris and the special events committee for the splendid arrangements for this outstanding celebration.
Mark your calendar for our next special event in early June, a Victorian Tea at the historic Propylaeum. Open your hatbox and dress up for this out of the ordinary afternoon bash. The program will include an upscale fashion show by NightenGals elegant lingerie boutique.
At the association's luncheon in May we are going to vote for our 2008/09 board of directors under the leadership of Jeanne Lugo. The luncheon will take place at the Garrison Conference Room at Fort Harrison State Park . Our guest speaker will be award winning journalist Diane Willis. Ms Willis is known to many of us as a former anchor of WRTV here in Indianapolis .
Our organization thrives due to the commitment of our dedicated volunteers. In summer when many of us go on vacation we are in need of more helpers to step in. Perhaps you are interested in organizing a meeting, or hosting an interest group. If you would like to help out, but are not able to commit yourself for a whole year, take this opportunity to get involved. You might get so much joy out of it that you decide to sign up as one of our interest group leaders. Please contact our Vice-president of Interest Groups, Linda Halcomb, for more information.
On a sad note our association recently lost a friend and committed former board member, Angenieta Biegel , MD. After receiving her medical degree in the Netherlands and completing a fellowship in Allergy at Duke University , Angenieta joined the IU school of medicine in 1960 and retired as professor emeritus. in 1992 after a distinguished medical career, which included 40 years of direct patient care. She was involved in numerous community and charitable organizations and was granted various prestigious awards. I personally had the utmost respect for Angenieta and always valued her sound advice. The AIW has contributed to the Angenieta Biegel Friends in Immunology Fund, which provides stethoscopes for medical students in Kenya .
Spring, with warmer temperatures and lots of sunshine, is a wonderful time to be outside and explore Indianapolis and the surrounding areas with your AIW friends. Come to "Do you speak Art?" for a tour of historic downtown, join our new "Sketching Club" at Holliday Park or enjoy a visit to the Garfield Park Conservatory with our "Explore!" group.
"Auf Wiedersehen!"
